Border trade infrastructure crucial for development of NE region:Sinate

SHILLONG, JULY 26: “Border trade infrastructure is the most crucial factor for development of volume of exports from North East India” said David Sinate , Chief General Manager of Exim Bank while inaugurating the Export Import & Global Trade Conference in Shillong today which was organised by Indian Chamber of Commerce.  Sinate said that Infrastructure and connectivity is very important for the growth of Exports from the region and Exim Bank is taking a no of initiatives in this regard. Exim Bank is financing the various infrastructures like land custom station, roads and bridges for the growth of exports.
Sinate also highlighted the importance of banking facilities for the same purpose. There should be special manufacturing hubs in the border areas for the exports along with capacity building and skill development. H.E.  Phub Tsering, Consul General of Royal Embassy of Bhutan said that the consulate in Guwahati is already facilitating a no of export related projects and hoped to do many more . Earlier Sunil Kumar Tandon Chief General Manager said that finer balancing act is required for economic development in the region keeping in mind the ecological factor also. Tourism has huge potential in the region and giving in mind that the region has high literacy rate it should not be lagging behind in
international trade. Manufacturing for the purpose of exports should generate huge no of jobs in the region. High transportation cost is major hindrance and the issue should be looked after. State bank India has already opened branches in Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh for the growth of international trade. Earlier Rahul Singh Joint DGFT has said that although the internal infrastructure in the country has improved a lot, the same in the boder areas are not improved and is a major challenge. All the important departments of Govt of India has been given specific targets for North East and this should increase the export and employment for the region. He said that for a low population state like
Meghalaya should target export markets for growth of income level. Mr. Prabhat Bezboruah , Co Chairman of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of Tea Board of India said that the total export from the country is 303 billion dollars and export from Northast India is only 0.3 5 % of the national figure. The major export from the region is tea but we should look forward to more products like cane and Bamboo, handloom and handicrafts etc. The region should have a focused and specific export policy for the region. The Seminar saw participation from various agencies like Department of Industry and Commerce, Govt. of Meghalay, Commissionerate of Customs, APEDA, Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India and HDFC Bank.
