SHILLONG, AUG 13: The state Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Excise, Registration Taxation Stamps (ERTS) department for promulgation of the Meghalaya Goods and Services Tax Ordinance 2019 with retrospective effect from April 1, this year.
At the same time, it has also approved the amendment of the Meghalaya Regulation of the Game of Arrow Shooting and the Sale of Teer Tickets Act, 2018 in the form of an ordinance which seeks to reduce the distance for setting up of teer counters to 100 meters from educational institutions and place of worship.
After the meeting of the Cabinet held here on Tuesday, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said the Goods and Services Tax Council (GSTC) has approved the proposal for enhancing the limit of registration under the GST to Rs 20 lakh from Rs 10 lakh.
“In view of this, the Cabinet has approved the promulgation of the Meghalaya GST Ordinance, 2019 which will be effective from April 1,” he told reporters.
Asked, Tynsong said people whose annual turnover exceeds Rs 20 lakh have to mandatorily register under the Goods and Services Tax. He said now those whose aggregate turnover is below Rs 10 lakh will no longer have to register.
On the setting of teer counters, the deputy chief minister said earlier in the orginal Act, the distance for setting of teer counters was allowed at minimum 300 meters from educational institutions and places of worship.
“However, the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the department to reduce the same to 100 meters for setting of teer counters,” he said.
On the reason for this decision, Tynsong said 300 meters is quite huge especially in Shillong and so we felt that the proposal of the ERTS department is justified.
