Cabinet approves social audit

SHILLONG, NOV 18: The state cabinet on Tuesday approved setting up of a ‘Social Audit Unit’, an independent body aimed at maintaining transparency in the implementation of the centrally sponsored National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) across the state.

“We have approved the setting up of the Social Audit Unit mandated as per the guidelines of the Social Audit Scheme Rules of the union ministry,” Meghalaya C&RD minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

According to Tynsong , the audit unit will prepare an annual report on the overall activities besides cases of misappropriation of the funds under the NREGS, which will be submitted to the department concern.

“This independent body will go through the records and accounts on the implementation of the scheme across the state,” Tynsong said while informing that the state government is also proposing to set up such body at the district level.

Tynsong also informed that the Social Audit Unit will be headed by a person who is holding position of a retired head of the department.- By Our Reporter
