Carrying of cash exceeding Rs 50,000 prohibited

SHILLONG, OCT 8: East Khasi Hills district election officer (DEO) Isawanda Laloo on Friday prohibited carrying cash exceeding Rs 50,000 to ensure a free and fair conduct of the upcoming by elections to the Mawryngkneng and Mawphlang Assembly seats, slated for October 30.

“I…do hereby prohibit any person or group of persons from carrying cash exceeding Rs 50,000 or gift items which are valued at more than Rs 10,000 in the East Khasi Hills district,”Laloo said in her order.

She said that information was received that some persons are likely to carry large amounts of cash likely to be used for inducement of electors.

“Whereas, I am satisfied that such action, if allowed, would affect the conduct of free and fair election to the by-election and is likely to cause breach of peace and tranquility ultimately resulting to loss of life and property,” the district magistrate added.

The order was in line with the Election Commission of India direction to check bribery of voters during the conduct of any election and ensure the voters exercise the franchise freely and fairly without fear or inducement.
