Centre to sanction Rs 70 Cr for repairing of NH-6

SHILLONG, NOV 7: Maintenance and repairing of the dilapidated national highway-6 from Mawryngkneng to Jowai will start very soon.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has informed that a detailed project report (DPR) has been submitted by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for the stretch starting from Mawryngkneng in East Khasi Hills up to Jowai in West Jaintia Hills district.

“Very soon we are going to get the sanction. Once the sanction is accorded, tender will be called very soon and I am very sure within a few months from now we will be able to restore the entire deplorable road condition from Mawryngkneng till Jowai,” he said.

When asked, Tynsong said that the DPR also includes the Jowai bypass up to 4th Mile, which is also in a deplorable condition.

Last week, the East Jaintia National Council (EJNC) had also sought the intervention of the deputy chief minister for immediate repair of the NH-6.

“He (Tynsong) informed that the Centre would soon sanction Rs 70 crore for repairing of the NH-6 till East Jaintia Hills district,” EJNC president Sambormi Lyngdoh said.

He said the organization has also expressed concern over the delay to complete the Jowai shopping complex at Iawmusiang since 2006.

“We also reminded him of the assurance given by chief minister Conrad K Sangma during a meeting with the JHADC and PWD (Buildings) in 2020 to release funds for the immediate completion of the project but sadly till today nothing happened. Tynsong has assured us to take up the matter with the state government,” Lyngdoh said.
