Charge sheets against ILP activists soon: SP

KharkhrangShillong, December 2:  East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang informed that the police will complete the process of charge-sheet process of the eighty-six cases registered against the pro Inner Line Permit (ILP) activities of different ngos by the end of this month and then it will be put up on fast track mode before the special court constituted by the state government. He also informed that seven summon notices have been served against the ILP activists but they are yet to turn up before the investigating officers of different police stations.

The eighty six cases are in connection to the arsons, stone-pelting, murder and other criminal activities that had taken place during the three months long agitations sponsored by the thirteen ngos demanding for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state to contain unabated illegal influx.

“We have charge sheeted at least 15 cases so far and we target to complete the process on all the cases by the end of December,” Kharkhrang said during  a news conference on Monday.

A total of 71 pro ILP activists have been arrested in relation to the 86 cases, mostly belonging to the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) and Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Kharkhrang informed.

Kharkhrang also said that summon notices were also served to the leaders of the ngos directing them to appear before the IOs for recording their statement in cases that have been registered. The different IOs handling the cases have also issued a seven days deadline to the leaders to appear before them.

Kharkhrang ssaid,  “During the last ten days, we have issued summon notices to at least seven pro ILP leaders but till today none of these leaders have turn up before the IOs even after deadline for them to appear have already expired.”

On the failure of the ngos leaders to appear before the IQs Kharkhrang said, “If they (ngos leaders) don’t appear before the IOs, we have enough evidence to proceed with the charge sheet process and would forward the charge sheet to special court for necessary action.”

Kharkhrang also informed that of the seventy one persons arrested persons, 60 per cent were release on bail. However he said the KSU members Wankerlang Jyrwa and Badonkupar Nongbri who were arrested in connection with setting ablaze a businessman Vikash Nandwal in Motphran and subsequently died have been denied bail.- By Our Reporter
