SHILLONG, JULY 31: National People’s Party (NPP) national president and chief minister of Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma today filed his nomination papers for contesting the upcoming bye-election to the South-Tura seat, slated to be held on August 23.

Sangma, who was accompanied by party leaders and workers, filed his nomination papers before Returning Officer Sabrella Marak at Tura in West Garo Hills on Tuesday.

Prior to filing nomination papers, the chief minister also paid visit to his late father Purno Agitok Sangma’s graveyard.

It may be mentioned here that Sangma, also the Tura MP, was sworn in as chief minister of the state on March 6. He has to get himself elected to the Assembly within September 6.

His decision to contest from the seat was after his younger sister Agatha K Sangma resigned as member of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on July 2.

The Election Commission has announced bye-elections to South Tura and Ranikor Assembly seats in the state on August 23 and the results will be declared on August 27.

The last date of filing of nominations will be on August 6 and the next day will be the scrutiny of nomination papers.

The last date of withdrawal of nominations will be held on August 9.
