Chief secretary to discuss militants’ threat in GH with home, police depts officials

Shillong, Nov 29: The  threat to politicians including those who are going to contest the 2013 assembly election and, therefore, have to campaign in Garo hills will be discussed by the chief secretary WMS Pariat with home department officials and police officers.

A home department official informed that the report of the East Garo hill SP on the attack on former deputy chief minister and Meghalaya Congress working president Deborah Marak has been submitted by the police headquarter on Wednesday evening. The official said that the report would be discussed threadbare by the chief secretary with top home department officials and the police.

The officer said that the government is viewing the attack on Marak at a precursor to what might become a major concern during the election campaign. He informed that the threat to politicians in Garo hills will be deliberated at length as the attack on Marak and also the Community & Rural Development minister Saleng C Sangma has spread a “fear psychosis not only in the political circle but also to the public.”

The officer said that the government is well aware that there will be militant group who might try to dictate terms during the election thereby sabotaging the commitment of the Election Commission of India to hold a “free and fair” election.

The officer, however, informed the government will try to formulate and execute a plan that is aimed at ensuring that politicians and people participate in the election process without any kind of pressure from any quarter. He even expressed his hope that the election in Garo hills might actually be “peaceful” which he felt is a possibility.

Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma had also acknowledged Garo hills has become bit dicey as he has issued a travel advisory to politicians, VIPs and high profile visitors visiting Garo hills.- By Our Reporter
