Chokpot:Still tense

TURA, MAY 30:  Chokpot, in South Garo Hills district , remained tense but under control. No untoward incidents were reported today. Curfew, however, continues.

Curfew was imposed on Thursday after mob attacked Chokpot police station and torched three police vehicles for the custodial death of a suspected overground worker of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), Witson M. Sangma.

Sangma had died inside a police lock-up on Wednesday.

“The situation is under control and curfew remains in place since Thursday afternoon. There have been no untoward incidents,” said deputy commissioner in charge of the district, TG Momin.

There was no relaxation of curfew on Thursday night and all through Friday to prevent any flare up in violence even as additional security forces have arrived from Baghmara and Tura.

“If there are no untoward incidents we may lift curfew on Saturday morning for about five to six hours to allow people to purchase food items. But that will depend on the situation,” said Momin.
