Church leaders asks Govt to resolve reservation policy issue

SHILLONG, MAY 30: The Khasi Jaintia Church Leaders’ Forum (KJCLF) on Tuesday appealed to the state government to resolve the issue related to the job reservation policy at the earliest.

“With the ongoing uproar on the reservation policy, we appreciate the youths of the past who have made it in life today in spite of so many deprivations and challenges of a Policy – then thought to be fine! After five decades however, the policy is found to be in need of a review,” KJCLF secretary Rev Dr Edwin H Kharkongor said in a statement issued here.

“So, for the sake of our Youths today and the future generations, it is honourable to correct the mistake which has been overlooked and unheeded by indifference and selfishness of many in the past as well as the present dispensations in power. Hence we appeal to the Government and relevant authorities that this be resolved as early as possible,” he said.

Rev Kharkongor also informed that the KJCLF together with a few city-based Church leaders recently had an in-house conversation on the status of Christianity and the position of the Church, its institutions and the experiences of Christian believers in the country today which are issues of great concern lately.

“We feel that Christian leaders must have an understanding of the Law and be able to counsel their members on issues affecting the profession and practice of their faith and mission, as well as on issues affecting the society in general. We exhort leaders of Churches and institutions to conduct relevant trainings on these matters from time to time,” he said.

The Forum also called upon fellow Christians in the region to join together in prayer that peace will prevail in Manipur and to be of help and support to the immediate victims of the ongoing conflicts in our neighbouring State.
