CM accuses PM of diluting the federal structure

SHILLONG, JAN 24: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today hit at the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly attempting to dilute the federal structure of the country.

“They (BJP-led NDA government) are going to destroy this nation and diluting the federal structure is one step for ultimate disastrous future of this nation,” Sangma told journalists here on Wednesday.

He was reacting to the recent announcement of a Rs 70 crore scheme for development and repairing religious and spiritual circuits in the state made by the Union Tourism Minister KJ Aphons in a bid to woo voters ahead of the polls.

Sangma said that nowhere in the history of the country this type of attitude from Government of India has been seen where the government is trying to reach out to the stakeholder directly.

Even all the centrally sponsored schemes, how are they implemented, the guidelines are there. Have they changed the guidelines in contravention with our federal structure? he asked.

Recalling that Modi, when he was the chief minister of Gujarat he talked about the attempt to dilute the federal structure of the nation, Sangma however said, “Today, this particular strategy of the BJP gives you a proof beyond reasonable doubt about their intention to dilute and weaken the federal structure of the nation.”

“Why do you have state governments, why do people fighting for statehood because the federal structure that we have, have withstood the test of time. And these people are aggressively engaging in activities to dilute, dilute and weakened the federal structure it is very dangerous,” he warned.

It may be mentioned two major churches in Meghalaya – Catholic Church and the Mawkhar Presbyterian Church have announced they are against such a move which may be read otherwise and trying to use the church in electoral politics.

Meanwhile, the chief minister also accused the BJP of corrupting the political system.

“What is the usual trend we have seen all across the country in as far as the BJP is concerned. They have engaged in such a strategy which is corrupting the political system in the country. The party is engaging in rhetoric about complete crusade against corruption by engaging in practices which is corrupting the political system,” he said.

Urging the people to read between the lines, Sangma said the people of the nation needs to be more analytical while stating “You have seen what has happened in Manipur. Do you think MLAs shift their allegiance overnight just like that?”

“The party (BJP) who is engaging in rhetoric in their so called self proclaim crusader against corruption they are engaging in activities, strategy which is corrupting the political system in the country which is dangerous trend for the future,” he said while adding every citizens must condemned it.
