CM call on counterpart

SHILLONG, SEPT 4: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today took up the issue of medical seats with his Assam counterpart on the need to mutually resolve the matter at the earliest to ensure that the future of the aspiring medical students is not disrupted.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal assured Sangma of addressing the issue from his side.

“He (Sonowal) has assured me that he would be speaking with his principal secretary health to deal with matter,” Sangma said.

“I have also informed my counterpart that talks at chief secretary and additional cs level are already underway to address the matter which could have easily been avoided,” he added.

At least 10 medical students from Meghalaya were denied admission by Assam’s medical colleges even as they have threatened to stage a hunger protest while blaming the lack of communication between the two state governments.

Meanwhile, chief minister said that legal measures have also been activated by the government.

He said the government has directed the chief secretary to immediately seek the intervention of the Supreme Court and is looking forward to a favourable resolution to the matter.

According to him, the government has taken serious note on the medical seats issue which will affect several aspiring medical students of the state.
