SHILLONG, AUG 20: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday termed the Congress’ decision to approach the MDA coalition partners for forming a new dispensation as a “desparate move”.
“In my entire political career till now…I don’t think we have ever seen so much of desperation from an opposition party and desperation level has gone to the point where personal attacks are being made, angry words have been used, which we really don’t expect from senior people and people of that stature,” Conrad told reporters here.
He said it is quite sad to see the kind of extreme sense of desperation that is prevailing right now in the leadership of the Congress in the state.
The Congress in its meeting held recently had decided to write to leaders of all the MDA coalition partners to discuss the need to overthrow the NPP-led state government citing that the state is not in safe hands.
This came following the breakdown of law and order on August 15, as people demonstrated their anger against the alleged fake encounter that killed the former self-styled general secretary of the banned HNLC, Cheristerfield Thangkhiew on August 13 early morning.
The Chief Minister however claimed that some of the MLAs of the Congress had apologized on behalf of their leader.
“I was in fact a little amused. I don’t want to take names, few days back there were some MLAs from the Congress who had called me almost apologizing and saying that we are quite a shame to see the kind of language being used by their leadership and the behavior that is there – so that speaks a lot about how things are within the Congress itself and as I said I have no comments on the kind of comments that they are making,” he said.
Conrad further alleged that the Congress had approached the coalition partners many times despite making their stand very clear to support the MDA government.
“So many times the coalition partners have been approached and everytime the coalition partners have repeatedly told them (Congress) that this government will continue with our support,” he said.
Accusing the Congress of hunger for power, the Chief Minister said, “It seems that their focus is not about development of the people and the issues of the people but their focus is more on toppling and how they will come back to power.”
Stating that this is not healthy for the system, he said there are challenges being faced by the state but as a government “we are not here to say that we know or we have all the answers to everything, we never can, situations are very complicated and it requires everybody to work together.”
“As a Chief Minister I would like to urge the opposition, urge the political leaders and urge society as a whole that we must rise above all these kinds of political games. They are playing games, they are not succeeding, what am trying to say is you play the game or not it is up to you.
Therefore, this is my appeal to everybody, especially the opposition that let’s not get into this kind of petty political comments and let’s get serious about working for our people and finding ways to resolve the issues that are there in front of us,” he added.
