CM wife gets Cong ticket,5 MLAs ignored

verdict 2013 - 1SHILLONG, JAN 6: Kicking up a hornet nest, five sitting Congress legislator names were missing from the Congress list released on Sunday night in Delhi even as Chief Minister Mukul Sangma’s wife Dikkanchi D Shira and Sayedullah Nongrum- who had on numerous occasions rebelled against the chief minister- were allotted the party ticket to contesting the upcoming Meghalaya assembly election slated for early February.

The sitting Congress legislators who did not find favour with the Congress leaders and were denied party tickets are Community and Rural Development Minister Saleng Sangma and sitting Congress legislators Samuel Sangma, Abdus Saleh, Nehlang Lyngdoh and Stanly Wiss Rymbai.

But chief minister’s wife Dikkanchi D Shira managed to get the party ticket even as Sayedullah Nongrum- against whom many state Congress leaders belonging to Mukul Sangma camp were against allocation of ticket to him- showed that he has the ears of the Congress high command as he is perceived to be close to the Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel as he managed to beat his arch rival Abdus Saleh and get the ticket.

Four new entrants Manas Chaudhuri, Roshan Warjri, AT Mondal and Limison and Limison Sangma have been given the Congress tickets.

By denying the party ticket to the five sitting legislators, the Congress will surely be up against them as they are going to rebel and make the task of winning for those who have replaced them as the party candidates that much difficult.

Rebel candidate(s) play a crucial role in the defeat of party candidate. A classic example is that of JD Rymbai who was denied the Congress ticket in the 2008 election because he had rebelled against the state party leaders and replaced the then Congress leader DD Lapang as chief minister.
