CoE asks pollution control board to probe into Lukha river pollution

20210125_203401SHILLONG/JOWAI, JAN 25: The Assembly’s Committee on Environment on Monday directed the central and state pollution control boards to take up in depth study on the reason for Lukha river to change its colour from green to blue.

Lukha, one of the major rivers in East Jaintia Hills District, has turned blue again. This has been a regular phenomenon witnessed since 2007.

However, it was only last year during the COVID-19 lockdown that the river had not changed its colour to blue.

Speaking to reporters, chairman of the committee, SK Sunn said, “If the committee is not satisfied with the findings of the in depth study, it may demand for instituting an independent inquiry (into the pollution of the Lukha river).”

Earlier, member of the committee, HM Shangpliang informed that the committee has directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Meghalaya Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) to conduct an in depth study into the incident.

“They have been asked to submit a report at the earliest,” he said.

It may be mentioned here that the MSPCB had carried out a detailed scientific study after the first incident was reported in February 2007. The report had stated that due unscientific coal mining the water was highly acidic.

The Committee has inspected the downstream of the Lukha river near the Sonapur Bridge as well as the confluence of Lukha and Lunar river.

Shangpliang also questioned how the water at the place where the Lukha and Lunar confluence is yellow in colour and when going downstream its water is blue in colour.
