SHILLONG, JULY 24: To oversee the effective implementation of the Food Security Scheme (FSS) in the state, the Meghalaya government will constitute a special commission. The FSS is flagship scheme of the union government.
Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma told reporter at the sideline of a seminar on Wednesday, “We will soon notify the state Food Security Commission (FSC) whose mandate is to oversee the smooth implementation of the scheme in the state.”
Sangma informed that the FSC will decide on how the FSS is implemented in the state as per the guidelines of the Food Security Ordinance which got the Presidential nod recently.
Under the scheme, over 21 lakhs people in Meghalaya will benefit from the FSS directly which also includes over two lakh BPL households, a senior government official informed.
As per the scheme, rice will be available at Rs 3 per kg, while wheat and coarse cereals will be offered at Rs 2 and Re 1 respectively for each kg, the official added.
The union government earlier this month decided to issue an ordinance to give nation’s two-third population the right to get 5 kg of food grain every month at subsidised rates of Rs 1-3 per kg.
The food security programme when implemented will be the biggest in the world with the government spending an estimated Rs 1, 25,000 crore annually to supply about 62 million tons of rice, wheat and coarse cereals to 67 per cent of the population.- By Our Reporter
