Compensation to victims’ kin

SHILLONG, AUG 14: In what can be termed as waking up from its slumber, the forest department today came up with helpline numbers for facilitating the felling of trees which are posing danger to human life and property in and around the state capital.

In a statement issued here, the Divisional Forest Officer Khasi Hills (Territorial) Division informed that the general public, government departments, institutions, organizations and schools can contact the helpline numbers at 943699910294369991459436998362 for felling of such trees.

This came following the last week’s tragic incident which killed at least three persons after an old Eucalyptus tree on top of a taxi they were travelling in near the Raj Bhavan here.

The deceased were identified as Crystal Gayle Kharnaior (23) of Mawlai Nongkwar Block-V, Paul LB Lyngdoh (70) and taxi driver Hubert Swer (35).

The state government has also come under severe criticism for alleged negligence which has led to the incident, which otherwise could have been averted.

Meanwhile, the state government has also announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to each of the three victims who were killed in the incident.

East Khasi Hills District deputy commissioner PS Dkhar said that the ex-gratia payment sanctioned from the State Disaster Relief Fund would be provided to the next of kin of the deceased after August 15.

He also informed that the two injured persons Wannysha Ksoo (27) and Mewmemorial Whaling (51) would also be provided with reimbursement for medical expenses.
