TURA, MAY  9: BJP’S national spokesperson Nalin Kohli, who is in-charge of Meghalaya, on Monday  said that the Tura bye-poll holds immense importance as it is a tribute to one of India’s tallest politician late Purno Agitok Sangma.

He said that Congress party has conceded defeat, which is clear from the mood and the Congress party’s poster, where they have criticized BJP and have forgotten to seek votes for their own candidate.

“The bye-election is in memory and tribute to PA Sangma, son of the soil. He has represented Tura and became the speaker of this country. His luminous political career can’t be forgotten”, Kohli said, when asked, why BJP did not field a candidate. He also stated that National People’s Party (NPP) is an alliance partner of the BJP.

Kohli arrived on Sunday along with BJP Meghalaya unit president Shibun Lyngdoh and other party functionaries.

Addressing media at a hotel, Kohli said, “Mood of the election is becoming clear with every passing hour. People are against the Congress in Garo hills. The national mood is against the Congress which is also predominant. Mukul Sangma’s government will soon collapse under its own weight”.

On May 11 union tribal affairs minister Jual Oram will campaign in Tura to seek mandate for National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Conrad K. Sangma, who is pitted against Congress candidate Dikkanchi D. Shira, a sitting legislator from Mahendraganj and wife of chief minister Mukul Sangma.

National Minority Morcha president Abdul Rashid will campaign in Garo hills between May 12 -14.

“Kiren Rijiju and Sarbananda Sonowal are likely to campaign for Conrad Sangma. The parliament session is currently on, so we need to work it out. Rijiju and Sonowal are very keen to campaign for NPP candidate”, Kohli informed.

Kohli thanked Dikkanchi for her honest confession that Conrad Sangma is a good person. “I have noted with amusement Mrs Dikkanchi’s comment. She has nothing against Conrad Sangma but against BJP. She has summed up that Conrad is a good candidate”.

On Congress party’s election poster, Kohli said, “I have long history of handling election and I have seen a unique Congress poster. They are not seeking votes for their candidate but have accused the BJP. Since she said Conrad Sangma is a nice person. Let her be true to her feelings and emotion and withdraw her candidature for the upcoming election”.

Terming that Mukul is famous for deals, Kohli offered a deal to the chief minister asking him to allow Conrad to win the election unopposed, as they are not seeking votes. “I want to see how they would react on this deal”, Kohli asserted.

Questioning the Congress for trying to communalize the election and branding the BJP as “anti-Christian” and “anti-Muslim” party, Kohli said, “Their comment speaks that they (Congress) are uneasy and nervous. Mukul’s government is shaky. BJP member won election to district council in Congress candidate’s home constituency”.

He clarified that BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi understands only “politics of development”. He attacked Mukul and Dikkanchi for behaving like king and queen of Meghalaya. “Meghalaya is not a kingdom. Mukul and Dikkanchi can’t behave like a king and queen”, he asserted.

On Dikkanchi’s communal speech, Kohli said, “We will file a complaint with the returning office and subsequently file an FIR”

Accusing the Congress party for their false propaganda against BJP, Kohli said, “Congress party will collapse on its own as Mukul is creating contradictions and conflicts, which will hamper his own party. India has already rejected Congress and it includes Garo hills”. He also thanked Congress for popularizing BJP in Garo hills.

NPP legislator James K. Sangma, elder brother of Conrad, who was present at the press conference, thanked Prime Minister Modi and BJP for support extended to NPP. He said, “Mukul has failed to answer the questions raised by NPP candidate and is trying to divert attention of the public. He is vitiating the environment and is communalizing this election. It is very unfortunate. We hope he (Mukul) changes his ways. This is not a healthy trend, where election was never fought on communal line”.-From Our Correspondent
