Cong will fail: Syiem

SHILLONG, DEC 15: Suspended Congress member Pynshngain N Syiem, who resigned as MLA today to join the PDF, predicted that ruling Congress and also the two regional parties – UDP and HSPDP will “fail miserably” in the upcoming 2018 state Assembly elections.

“The Congress will fail (this time) and the people of the state are also fed up with the two regional political parties (UDP and HSPDP) as they now want the People Democratic Front (PDF),” Syiem told reporters soon after tendering his resignation before the Speaker here.

However claiming that the next government will be formed by the regional parties and other likeminded parties, Syiem who is going to lead the PDF very soon said that the Congress is a “directionless” family and it has failed miserably.

He further added that the problem related to the delay in passing the KHAD (Village Administration) Bill 2015 and also regarding the MUDA’s forceful implementation of the building byelaws in non-municipal areas should have been resolved two years before.

His statement also came a day after the state government and KHADC had unanimously agreed to recall back the VAB pending for examination by the Ministry of Home Affairs during a joint meeting which was also attended by headmen yesterday.

Referring to the anti-dual post Act passed by the Congress-led state government which has forced as many as seven MLAs to resigned as members of district councils, Syiem alleged that the entire exercise was just a wastage of public money.

“Over Rs 2 crore was wasted for the bye-elections to the two ADCs – KHADC & JHADC following the passing of the amendment Act which however has nothing to do with holding of dual post as an MDC can contest MLA elections,” he said.

He said that the Act was designed with the intention of targeting only a single person.

Stating that though the PDF is a new party, Syiem however claimed that the party is unique and different from other regional political parties in the state as it was formed after much difficulties was being faced by the people including farmers and unemployed youths.

“The PDF is a combination of regional and national thinking and it will adopt the best combination kind of a politics,” he said.

Asked, Syiem however denied that the PDF is having an understanding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the upcoming elections. “We will not have any pre-poll alliance but we will discuss on matter whether to have post poll alliance with other parties after the elections,” he added.

The PDF have so far declared as many as 22 candidates for the upcoming 2018 elections. However, the ruling Congress will be fielding an ex-bureaucrat HM Shangpliang to contest against Syiem from Mawsynram constituency.

Reacting to a query, Syiem however said he is confident that people will continue to support him in the ensuing elections especially that this time they will be proud of him as he would be leading the PDF.
