SHILLONG, APR 2: Agitated over the alleged “racist” remark of the Union minister of state Giriraj Singh against AICC president Sonia Gandhi, Meghalaya Mahila Congress Workers-MMCW- burnt the effigy of the union minister and also demanded his removal from the union cabinet..

A BJP MP from Bihar and a cabinet minister in Narendra Modi cabinet, Singh allegedly uttered in what many termed as “racist remarks” during a “private conversation” allegedly questioning whether the Congress would have accepted Sonia’s leadership had she not been godi-chamri (white- skinned).

The private conversation which was later aired by a journalist created furor among the Congress members.

During the conversation Singh had asked, “Had Rajiv Gandhi married a Nigerian woman and if she was not a white-skinned woman, would the Congress have then accepted her leadership?.”

Singh , is a union minister of state for micro, small and medium enterprises in Modi’s cabinet.

Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC) took umbrage over the alleged “racist remark” of Singh during a meeting held at the Congress Bhawan on Thursday and condemned the union minister.

In a statement issued to the media, MPMC president Ebel M. War said, “We are so outraged by this unfair remark classifying women based on colour. The remarks show that the Union minister has a small mindset. Our AICC president is the symbol of women empowerment and a role model to so many women across the world. We give our full support to our leader.”

The MPMC wants Modi to also tender an apology for Singh’s remarks while demanding his removal.- By Our Reporter
