SHILLONG, SEPT 5: The functionaries of the dissolved body of the Pynursla Block Congress Committee (PBCC) will soon take a call on the sudden decision of the party to dissolve the block without any consultation at a general meeting to be convened shortly.
The decision was taken at the executive committee of the suspended body held in the city and attended by members from 54 polling booths.
Two strong supporters including Banangsan Tynsong and Basebon Rangjem also announced their resignation as general secretary of the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) and president of Assembly Youth Congress (AYC) respectively as a mark of protest.
The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) had recently dissolved as many as five BCCs which include the Pynursla BCC, a stronghold of Prestone Tynsong, who was dropped from the cabinet last month.
Speaking to reporters, former president Emlynstone Khongsti said that the meeting has resolved to soon convene a general meeting in the constituency to take a final decision to the extent of resigning from the Congress.
Khongsti, who was replaced by Hanbor Khongtani to head the BCC, also termed the Congress as an “indiscipline” party for taking such a hasty and inhumane decision to dissolve the block without taking the supporters at the grass root level into the consideration.
“We suggest the MPCC not to underestimate us as well as those in other blocks,” he said while expressing that the decision has hurt the sentiments of many strong supporters of the party which has taken the decision without any consultation.
He also informed that the calendar fixed for starting the touring programmes as part of gearing up the party’s preparation for the upcoming 2018 elections had to be cancelled following the MPCC’s decision.
Asked, Khongsti said that they are yet to be aware of any move by the party to project a new party candidate to contest against the sitting legislator Prestone Tynsong.
“In fact, we are yet to meet the MLA to discuss on this sudden development since he is still out of station,” he said adding “The MLA even after he was dropped from the cabinet had told us to continue to work for the Congress party.”
He however refused to reply to a query whether the decision to dissolve the BCC was part of the tactic adopted by the ruling Congress to indirectly oust out the sitting MLA, after reports suggested that he may leave the party to seek re-election from other political parties.
On the other hand, the former MPYC general secretary Banangsan Tynsong however claimed that the Congress had won from Pynursla after the people supported the sitting legislator.
“With this decision now we are uncertain whether the 12,000 odd voters who supported the Congress during the last election will support the party this time,” he said.
He maintained that the once the block is dissolved means that the Congress is asking them to leave the party.
To another query, the former block president however said that they are also yet to decide on whether to support other political parties in the coming elections, slated to be held in February next year.
