Congress to retain power: Lapang

SHILLONG, MAY 3: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief DD Lapang today exuded confidence that the ruling Congress party will come back to power in 2018.

“The Congress will be back to the government,” Lapang told reporters on Wednesday.

Stating that the same situation in other states like Manipur and Assam will not be witnessed in Meghalaya, the veteran Congress leader said, “That wrong will never come to Meghalaya, because we know how to hit and when to hit.”

Maintaining that the BJP is not a threat to the Congress, he said that it will take a long way for the BJP despite its attempt to have grand alliance with other political parties in the state.

Admitting that anti-incumbency is there and in fact everywhere, the former chief minister however still expressed hope that the party would still come out as the single largest party in the upcoming 2018 state elections.

Asked on the coming of the People Democratic Front (PDF) which is allegedly floated by a Congress suspended member PN Syiem, Lapang said, “It is also not a threat because the more the merrier for us to be back in power.”

On the other hand, the MPCC chief also maintained that Mukul Sangma will be the chief minister till the end of this term.

Stating that the Congress is not in the habit of projecting the chief ministerial candidate in advance, he said, “Lapang and Mukul should not be offended if they are not in that list because the Congress believes in consensus.”

According to him, projection of a leader is for the party to decide in a democratic way. “We never project leader in advance,” he stated.
