Cops, GNLA exchange fire

TURA, MAR 14: Meghalaya police on Saturday launched an operation against Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and exchanged fire at Rewak village in South Garo hills.  The firing took place around 6 am.

Rewak is about 53 km from Baghmara, the district headquarter of South Garo Hills. Police claimed in the exchange of fire the rebels sustained injuries but managed to flee.

“Today’s raid at Rewak was a follow-up on Tuesday GNLA ambush against police personnel”, said an official. In the GNLA attack led by its commander-in-chief Sohan D. Shira, four security personnel were killed.

“Our police team had been tracking these cadres that were responsible for the killing of the four policemen and we had information of their presence near Rewak. Our police team was spotted by the sentries on duty and as we engaged them, the rest managed to escape”, said Lakador Syiem,  South Garo Hills SP said.

Syiem said that the police had a challenge conducting the operation as the area had a civilian population. “We believe Sohan was amongst those present in this makeshift camp, which we have dismantled, though there were no recoveries”, he added.

In connection with GNLA ambush one suspected cadre of United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) was arrested from Mahadeo today. “The suspect is from Dristi Rajkhowa’s team and was involved in the attack”, said Syiem.- From Our Correspondent
