Council asked to pressurise govt to implement ILP

Shillong, Oct 17: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) members demand the immediate implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya besides putting in place other mechanism to control influx into the state.

After the motion of introduction of of ILP was moved by three MDCs Sohra MDC TW Chyne, Mylliem MDC Teilinia Thangkhiew and Mawkyrwat MDC EK Raswai during the second day of the council’s autumn session Wednesday, majority of the MDCs demanded for immediate implementation of ILP.

The KHADC members  urged the executive committee to put pressure on the state government to accept the recommendation made by the High Level Committee on Influx for the implementation of the ILP.

Moving the motion, Chyne said, “The influx to the Khasi hills does not end only in the towns and city but has increased drastically in the rural areas where mining operations is taking place which is also posing a serious threat.”

According to the Chyne there is urgent need to have a proper policy to look into the matter as the problem of influx not only threatened the very existence of tribal of the state but also increased the crime scenario in these areas.

Chyne said, “As per information, the population of non-indigenous is more than 19 lakh while the population of our own tribal people is just 14 lakh. This calls for immediate attention of the council to do something before its too late in protecting and safeguard the indigenous tribes and their land.”

KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pynshngain N Syiem in his reply said,  “We need to have a policy to control influx in these mining operated areas. The matter would soon be examined by the executive committee.”  – By Our Reporter
