CPA to respect religious sentiments: CM

SHILLONG, JULY 29: As a mark of respecting the religious sentiments of all, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday said that the Conference of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) will continue on Sunday only after the church services are over.

Responding to a query on the concerns being expressed that the CPA is being held on a Sunday, Sangma told reporters that since the parliament is in session, the only time the Lok Sabha Speaker could come in is during the weekend.

“Hence, we had limited options. Obviously, we are concerned about these issues and that is why though the programs were more in detail, we have asked the CPA to ensure that the program should start only after the church services are over,” he said while adding that “Therefore, respecting the religious sentiments of everybody, even the program if you look at it is mentioned out there that you can attend to your service and once a service is over only after that towards the afternoon the program will continue.”

The two-day CPA was inaugurated by the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
