CPI tries to rejuvenate in NE

SHILLONG, MAY 5: The Communist Party of India (CPI)national general secretary  S Sudhakar Reddy on Tuesday said a coordination committee would be set up to identify issues concerning the north east to strengthen the party in the region.

Reddy told reporters after the party’s meeting in Shillong, “We will have to identify our weaknesses and try to get out of it.”  Stating that the party’s inability to make inroads into the region is because of several ethnic problems, he said, “We will set up a coordination committee to study and identify the issues of the north east and accordingly chalk out programme of actions.”

Admitting that the party is weak in Meghalaya, Reddy said, “We are weak here and we are trying to generate and revive the party as enough work is not being done here.”

During the state council meeting, the CPI has adopted six resolutions revolving   around NGT ban on coal mining, law and order situation especially in Garo hills region besides others.

Reddy also alleged that there is  nexus between politicians, bureaucrats with coal mafia for the ongoing illegal mining of coal by private coal miners despite the ban by the NGT. He said, “Private coal mining is still continuing in Meghalaya I was told and without the support of the concern authorities it cannot take place and this proves the nexus of politician, bureaucrats and the coal mafia.”

CPI  felt that the  ban on coal mining by the NGT has affected economy of the state adversely as large number of people have been rendered unemployed even as it demanded that the state government to come up with alternative policy of rehabilitating the affected people.

“The propose move of the government to introduce a new mining policy will address the problem of environment issues,” CPI said.

Seeking the government intervention to ensure that  the small scale coal operators/miners interest is safeguarded , the CPI has also urged the government to strictly enforce a law to effectively control various mafia connected with the coal trade besides looking into environment issues relating to other mining activities such as limestone and proposed uranium mining.

On the law and order issue, the CPI said that party it expressed concern over  the law and order situation in Meghalaya particularly in Garo Hills. It said, “Killings, fake encounters, extortions, ransoms are the order of the day. In Garo hills even the National Human Right Commission had to intervene for gross violation of the human rights in the state.”

CPI also said that it is commonly believed there exist nexus between the militants and politicians as a result many of the funds meant for the development reaches the wrong hands and ordinary citizens are its victims.- By Our Reporter
