Crime graphs in East Khasi hills registers sharp increase

Shillong, Oct 19: East Khasi hills has witnessed a sharp rise in crimes over the last three years with crime against women (CAW) also registering an increase that has become worrisome to the police in the district.

According to data provided by the police department the cases registered on CAW in the district was 29 numbers in 2009, while it shoot up to 62 in 2010 and in 2011 the cases went up to 74. While kidnapping cases has also gone up.  In 2009 it was 12 cases, in 2010 it was 16 and last year 20 kidnapping cases were reported in the district.

The cases of murder have also gone up in comparison in the last three years. In 2009 there were 26 murder cases registered, in 2010 it was 23 while in 2011 there were 31 registered case in the district.

As far as theft, burglary and robbery cases the graph show that in 2009, 235 cases of theft were registered, burglary 74 and robbery 29. In 2010 there were 276 cases of theft reported in the various police stations of the district, 96 burglary and 32 cases of robbery. In the last year there were 257 theft cases, 68 burglary and 28 cases of robbery reported. – By Our Reporter
