SHILLONG, DEC 4: Meghalaya home minister Roshan Warjri said a multi-mode transport system needs to be introduced in order to meet the requirements for favourable trade and also declaring the region as special economic zone.  She said the state suffers from poor transport development.

Addressing the two day workshop on “Policy Dialogue on Economic and Transport Development for Border Areas in Eastern South Asia” held on Wednesday in Shillong Warjri said,  “We need to introduce a multi-mode transport system in order to meet the requirements of favourable trade as well as declare the region as special economic zone”.

Highlighting on the potential of the north eastern region which is blessed with rich biodiversity and need to tap these potential for uplifting the socio-economic conditions of the state, Warjri said such initiative will provide ample  opportunities for the thriving relationship with Asia and South East Asia and the outcome will be constructive referring to the workshop organized to discuss strategies.

Earlier, North Eastern Council (NEC) member MP Bezbaruah emphasized on the Look East Policy, which he said has raised great expectations, and shared his insights about the NE region. He informed that trading mainly consists of primary good which need to be improved.

Bezbaruah mentioned about the Asian highway which will be extended with tourism facilities in order to facilitate both vehicular traffic as well as tourist.

Senior Economist from ADB Cuong Minh Nguyen in his opening remark briefed about the importance and perspective of the workshop which aims to discuss cross border connectivity among Eastern South Asian countries.- By Our Reporter
