CSWO condemns vandalism

agnesSHILLONG, APR 5: The CSWO condemned the assaults and attacks on people on Thursday at Laitumkhrah when the Khasi Students Union (KSU) rally passed through the locality saying it sends a wrong signal outside the state as when the people of the north east are attacked in mainland India we immediately condemn but yesterday act of vandalism showed that “we are no better.”

In a press statement CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said, “Such acts sends a wrong  signals to the perpetrators in other states and such act of violations of human rights cannot be tolerated in a civilized society, especially in a Christian state that too just few days after Easter.”

The CSWO wondered how come the police said they were not aware that such incident of assaults and vandalism is likely to take place if the rally passes through Laitumkhrah as the special branch personnel are everywhere.”

The release questioned, “How is it that the police did not know?”  It also said that yesterday’s incident seems to be orchestrated by someone with the knowledge of the police and in the process the people were victimized.

The CSWO demanded an inquiry into the police lapses so that such an act of vandalism that degrades the “traditional customs” does not recur. The release said that people from this part are known to be peaceful, strong and added, “We cannot gain strength through violence because violence is perpetrated by those who are weak.”- By Our Reporter
