CSWO wants road probes

SHILLONG, JAN 27: The Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) has demanded that the state government must ask the CBI to investigate into the causes that led to the deteriorating condition of the National Highway – 44.

Recently, the state PWD minister Sniawbhalang Dhar had blamed the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) for its inability to maintain the National Highway – 44 which has led to the deplorable condition causing public havoc.

“Passing the blame from GREF (General Reserved Engineering Force)  to NHAI (National highways Authority of India) cannot be accepted and a CBI inquiry should be called for immediately by the state government,” CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said in a statement.

In an inspection to the NH-44 recently, Kharshiing informed that the condition of the roads in Jaintia hills all along the National Highway are a death trap to the public adding that even a pregnant woman or a seriously injured person would not be able to withstand travelling through these roads.

Kharshiing said that no action has been taken for rampant corruption of funds and shockingly the PWD minister is talking about bills for repairs for which no work is visible.

Kharshiing  said that the PWDchief engineer  should visit all the roads in the state and should give a report on the condition of the various roads that are not fit to be called roads even though in paper it is reads that the roads are complete. She demanded that those responsible for the corruption should be held accountable immediately.

Kharshiing also said, “The government should also issue orders to stop the illegal dumping of coal all along the National Highway which will harm the water bodies in these areas, and cause danger to life of the people who consume the contaminated water in and around these places.”

Kharshiing also expressed surprise that the MP, MLA’s of the areas or MDC are not raising the issues.  She hoped that the Meghalaya high court will take sou moto cases of public interests which directly harm human life, as she felt that the corrupt government will never order an inquiry.

Kharshiig concluded by saying that it can easily be made out that corruption and the many in the government are amassing wealth with nobody in authority willing to order an inquiry.- By Our Reporter
