Cultural ties to ease border tension

Jowai August 13: As part of the effort to normalize the situation in the disputed area of Block I, a meeting was convened by the Border Joint Action Committee-Jaintia and Karbi (BJAC-JK) wherein it was proposed to hold an “exchange-cultural-programme” by the Khasi villagers and Karbi settlers  even as these two communities (Karbi-Khasi) agreed to maintain status quo and continue to live in harmony.

After the brief disruption of peace and slight escalation of tension in this disputed border areas between Meghalaya the   leaders of the BJAC-JK comprising of the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) and Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) hold a separate meeting – one at Ampi village in Karbi Anglong district of Assam and Khanduli village in Jaintia hills district of Meghalaya on Monday.

JSU president Elnathan Pale told reporters after the meeting, “Exchange-cultural-programmes between Karbi and Khasi villagers have been proposed at the meeting held Ampi village of Karbi Anglong.”

Pale informed that the programme is aimed at developing mutual relationship between the people living in the disputed areas of the Meghalaya-Assam border.  He said, “The proposal will be taken up in the upcoming public meeting to be held after August 15 at Khanduli wherein people from both sides will be attending”.

On Friday, tension erupted at a disputed village in Block I at the Assam-Meghalaya border when Karbi and Khasi villagers clashed with each on the issue of putting up electricity posts by the Karbi villagers at Moosakhia – Lumpyrdi locality of Khanduli village. Khanduli villagers opposed the move made by the Karbi settlers which led to escalation of tension. – By Our Reporter
