Curfew relaxed, DC holds peace meeting

IMG_0003TURA, JUNE 22: Curfew was relaxed for four hours from 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday in Tura to enable the public to buy provision as the district appeared to be limping back to normalcy after Friday’s night carnage. West Garo hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi also held a meeting with the local legislator John Leslee, Mothers’ Union, church leaders and the youths to ensure peace prevails in the district.

Later during the day, Bakshi was busy holding a review meeting with his office and the police. The report of the meeting has to be submitted to the state home minister Roshan Warjri by evening.

However West Garo hills SP Mukesh Singh told this website on Saturday afternoon that curfew was relaxed only in Tura while the rest of the district continues to be under curfew. He also said there is no report of any untoward incident from any parts of the district.

Singh also informed that so far only one body was recovered from last mob violence and said, “We have recovered only one body so far and you should not believe rumors about more people being killed”.

On Friday night curfew had to be suddenly imposed in West Garo hills district including its headquarter Tura when an angry mob went on rampage after it was learnt that an eighteen years old mentally challenged girl was allegedly raped by five non-local labourers in Ganga  area of Wadanang locality in Tura at around 6.30 pm.

On hearing about the incident, the mob rushed to the spot and somehow managed to catch the labourers. However two of the labourers managed to give a slip to the crowd but the other three were beaten to pulp by the irate mob. Fortunately, police rushed to the spot and somehow manage to free the three labourers from the angry mob.

The three labourers were immediately taken to the Tura Civil hospital for medical treatment. But the mob followed but fortunately for the three labourers, strong presence of the security forces stopped them from entering the hospital.

The mob, however, went on a rampage and torched vehicles in Tura market and also vandalized shops. Fire tenders had to be called to douse the fire. The district administration had to impose curfew to control the situation.

Meanwhile the three labourers who condition is state to be quite serious have been shifted to Guwahati for further medical treatment. –By Our Reporter
