Dacoity gang arrested

SHILLONG, MAR 2: Six persons were arrested on Wednesday by police after they were involved in looting a businessman of Rs 1 lakh at a village in East Khasi hills district.

The incident took place at around 8.30 am to 9 am at Umngi bridge in Pongkung village, when the gang stopped the vehicle of the businessman and looted away the money, police said.

They accused were identified as  Gulshan Masi, driver of Local Taxi ML 05 E 2782, used for commission of crime, Amar Deb Burman of Lumparing, Pyndngen Kurbah of Pomblang, Pynshai Rani, Labhor Lyngdoh of Golf Club, Mawpun, and Kostar Marngar of Pomblang, they said.

District police chief M Kharkrang said, the gang were following a Bolero camper from Shillong in which the victim Banshanniah Nongrum was travelling to purchase broom sticks.

On reaching near Umngi bridge they stopped the vehicle and looted cash Rs. 1, 53,500 and fled away in two groups, he said.

He informed police immediately rushed to the place of occurrence and along with the help of the local people of Pongkung village they managed to apprehend three of them along with the vehicle and recovered the cash.

Subsequently, another three members of the gang were detained at a tea stall in Jakrem area by the police party.

Rani who was an MPDA detenue earlier has almost 15 to 20 cases of dacoity registered against him.-By Our Reporter
