TURA, MAR 29: West Garo hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi has appealed to the Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE) to revoke the Tuesday’s 12-hour Garo hills strike.
Bakshi said, “March 31 is the end of financial year. It is very important day for all of us as we have our hands full in trying to ensure bills, salaries etc. A shutdown will put us back in a huge way.”
The ADE has called for the strike seeking action against security personnel, who had vandalized its office on March 27.
Bakshi said that at present, the government is in a financial crunch and it is only in the last minute that some policies and allocation may be decided. So it’s important to keep everything ready. He added, “ We generally work overtime during this period to ensure developmental funds are not affected.”
An FIR has been lodged in connection with the security personnel’s “highhandedness”.
Bakshi assured that action will be taken against the erring security personnel and informed, “An internal enquiry is being carried out by senior police officer on the allegations.” He said the district administer request the ADE not to call a shutdown in view of the adverse affects it will have on salaries, pensioners, contractors amongst others.
ADE, however, is adamant to revoke the bandh. Its president Dalseng Momin said, “We are ready to call off the bandh if the guilty are arrested immediately. We understand it will be difficult for many, but we stand by our call as this sort of behavior cannot be allowed. We have been getting a lot of calls, even from Shillong, to withdraw the bandh but we will not do so until the guilty policemen are arrested immediately.”- From Our Correspondent
