SHILLONG, FEB 8: The KHNAM-state youth wing – on Wednesday served a 13-day ultimatum to the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) to complete the process of issuing appointment letters to over 700 qualified Jugali candidates.

It also seek immediate intervention of the state power minister into the matter, the party youth wing along with the candidates have threatened to launch agitational programme if the MeECL fails to pay heed to their demand.

Addressing a news conference, KHNAM-SYW president Thomas Passah said, “We demand the MeECL to complete the process of issuing appointment letters to all the 772 candidates declared as successful for the Jugali posts.”

He added, “Failing which we would be left with no other option but to announce agitational programmes to ensure justice is achieved.”

The decision was taken after there was no sign of seriousness on the part of the MeECL to fulfill its assurances made to the hundreds of aggrieved candidates, who protested in front its office on January 16, last.

The MeECL had declared as many as 772 candidates to be eligible for the post jugalis in the department. It had also agreed to provide appointment to 336 under phase-one, 233 each for phase-two and phase-three.

Passah however said, “Six months have passed not a single appointment letter was issued so far despite the fact that the validity of the merit list is going to be expired on August this year.”

He said the delay seems to be a ploy by the MeECL to deprive the rights of these candidates. “We therefore strongly urge the power minister to also intervene at his level and ensure that the matter is resolved at the earliest possible,” Passah added.

When asked, the party youth wing president said that earlier the excuse given by the MeECL on the delay to declare the results of the Jugali posts was due to financial constraint.

“However, now they (MeECL) is saying the appointment letters cannot be issued due to the delay in the process of police verification,” he said adding “It is in view of this, we are demanding that they should follow the Government of India decision to do away with the police verification before giving appointment.”

He said the MeECL can issue appointment based on candidates’ self- certification that they have no criminal records in any police stations while waiting for the police verification to complete.

Reacting to a query what made them hesitate to approach the court for necessary intervention, Passah however said, “Because such trend which forced people to go to the street or court for justice should be put to an end.”

He informed the court will be their last resort, if nothing positive comes up even after the proposed agitational programme.
