Declare Crinoline a heritage site: Michael Syiem

Shillong, August  16:  Senior citizens of the city led by Michael Syiem-  convener of Mait Shaphrang Movement (MSM)-  suggested to the government to think of constructing a state of the art 50 meters swimming poll either in Mawdiangdiang or some other warmer place instead of dismantling the Crinoline Swimming Pool (CSP).

A miffed Syiem along with others have shot a letter on Thursday to Deputy Chief Minister BM Lanong- also holding the sports portfolio- suggesting the sites for constructing the new swimming pool. Lanong had earlier announced that the CSP would be dismantled so that a new 50-meter swimming pool could be constructed there.

Building up the case, Syiem and others pointed out that the CSP was constructed by the British in 1940s primarily for the British soldiers who were wounded during the Second World War and had come to Shillong to recuperate from their wound.

The letter informed that the CSP was not meant for competitive purpose but more as a health center where middle aged and senior citizens would swim to keep themselves healthy. It also argued that the swimming pool be treated as a “heritage site” and given a facelift. – By Our Reporter
