Denotify Pnar Committee

SHILLONG, JULY 14: The Khasi Jaintia National Union (KJNU) today demanded JHADC to denotify its recently constituted committee to study the proposal of introducing the ‘pnar alphabets’. According to the KJNU, the protest against move to introduce the pnar alphabets is because the Khasi language is   to yet to be included in the Eight Schedule of the Constitution of India.

The 13-member Pnar Alphabet Committee (PAC) was constituted by the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) on April earlier this year.

The PAC headed by the JHADC chief Thombor Shiwat and member secretary C Tyngkan comprise of four executive members (EMs), two council’s officials and six others which include the RQ Laloo, who is the author of book on pnar alphabets.

Addressing newsmen here on Thursday, KJNU president Niman N Shadap said, “The JHADC should keep the proposal in abeyance since the Khasi Language is yet to be included in the Eight Schedule of the Constitution.”

He added, “Therefore, we demand the JHADC to denotify the Pnar Alphabet Committee.”

Protesting against the demand of the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU), Shadap said, “We cannot accept this demand because we want the Khasi Language, which is in use for over 175 years to get its place in the Eight Schedule first.”

According to him, Khasi Language is one among the 38 languages which are still fighting for inclusion in the Eight Schedule.

When asked, he however said the pnar alphabets cannot be accepted because there are different people who are staying in Jaintia Hills region. “The committee should take all stakeholders on board if it desires to come up with the alphabets,” he added.-By Our Reporter
