SHILLONG, JULY 26: Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) PJP Hanaman released Rs 1 lakh each to the families of the three police personnel who were killed on Friday in an IED blast at Tebrongre, West Garo Hills District of the state.

“An amount of Rs 1 lakh has been released from the Meghalaya Police Social Security Scheme (MPSSS) to each of the bereaved family members for immediate expenses,” the DGP said while adding “All the families of the martyrs will be given ex gratia payment of Rs 7.5 lakh from the state government.”

The three police personnel killed were Alphaious Khymdeit from Umden, Ri Bhoi, Rahul Marak from Aradonga, and driver constable Lembartu Suchiang from Jowai.

He also informed that the next of the kin of the martyrs will also be entitled to the last pay drawn till the notional date of retirement.

The Meghalaya police also requested the government to sympathetically consider providing employment to the eligible dependent family members of the martyrs, on compassionate grounds.

Expressing deep sadness by the loss, the DGP said the three valiant police personnel have became martyrs and have sacrificed their lives at the altar of duty.

He said they were on patrolling duty on Rongram-Daddengre road as it was a market day and there was a large presence of traders.

Condemning the act, the DGP said, “This act of GNLA and ULFA militants will not affect our morale and deter us from our ongoing counter-insurgency operations against the militants but will only spur us to work with greater determination.”

NPP CONDEMNS: Meanwhile the National People’s Party (NPP) strongly condemned the incident that killed the three policemen.

NPP spokesman and legislator James K Sangma said, “We demand that due compensation is given to the bereaved families of the three police constables who died performing their duties in ensuring peace and safety to the public.”

The NPP also condemned the killing of another non tribal labourer from Mankachar in West Garo Hills district second time in this week. Sangma said in a statemet, “We also urge upon the district administration to take stock of the situation and see that peace prevails in the bordering areas of Assam and Meghalaya.”

The NPP also lauded the West Garo hills deputy commissioner for his prompt response to the suggestion made by Tura MP PA Sangma in launching a help line 24×7 for people to call and inform the police in case of any extortion, kidnapping, murder and any other untoward incidents happening in Garo Hills from time to time.- By Our Reporter
