Colourful Dimchrang festival kicks off

AMPATI, DEC 9: It was grand welcome to the winter festivities in Garo hills, as Dimchrang Festival 2016 kicked off to a colourful start.

Sports and youth affairs minister Zenith Sangma, while inaugurating the festival, said that the festival gave an opportunity for the youths and particularly entrepreneurs to engage in business activities.

He said that festivals like Dimchrang would create awareness about Garo hills and its lifestyle to the rest of the world. He urged the locals to take advantage of the festival to upscale their entrepreneurial skills.

Citing example of Korea and its people, he said, “Before the Seoul Olympics the economy of the country was not in a good position but the people with their hard work and dedication has made the country progressive”.

Sangma also felicitated Senorita Miss International India 2016 Rewati Chetri, who was at Ampati at the invitation of the South West Garo Hills administration for attending a motivational talk show here.

Chetri while interacting with the youths shared her experience and journey from being a small town girl of Haflong in Assam to the stage of Miss International 2016, which was held at Tokyo Japan last month.

In her message to the youth gathering at Multi Facility Centre, Chetri advised the them to follow their dreams and do whatever possible to achieve it. “We should never get demotivated but always make our effort to achieve it. Success is bound to happen, if dedication and faith is intact”, Chetri added.

Addressing the gathering deputy commissioner of South West Garo Hills Cyril Diengdoh highlighted the importance of festivities, which will create a brand for Garo hills as a “tourism destination”.

He also said that the theme for this year was chosen to highlight the skills and expertise of the youths in different field of art, cultural and sports activities.
