Dome of Meghalaya’s new Assembly building collapsed

SHILLONG, MAY 22: The dome of the under-construction new building of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly collapsed on Sunday.

The incident took place at around 12.30 am, police said.

However, there was no casualty reported as there was no workers present at the construction site at Mawdiangdiang under the New Shillong Township during the incident, they said.

Earlier, the Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh had informed that the new building of the Meghalaya Assembly will be inaugurated by September.

Lyngdoh had informed that the installation of the dome will be completed by July and testing will be done in a month’s time which is likely by the end of August.

The first phase of the project included the main hall, rooms of the Speaker, Chief Minister, Ministers, canteen, offices of the Assembly Secretariat etc.

The second phase of the project will follow which will include quarters for the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, MLAs etc, he had said.

The new Assembly building is being constructed on 80 acres of land at Mawdiangdiang in the New Shillong Township. The project amounting to Rs 127 crore has been allotted to Uttar Pradesh Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Ltd which is PSU of the Uttar Pradesh government.
