Dorbar prohibits women

SHILLONG, APR 11: The village dorbar of Kynroh Nonglyer under Sohiong Syiemship has decided not to disburse food items through the Public Distribution System (PDS) to the women folk of the village.

Apparently the decision was taken by village sordar Kwit Kyrsian and secretary Faithstar Nongtri which has rankled the Civil Society of Women Organisation (CSWO).

The CSWO is now seeking the intervention of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to haul up those responsible for debarring women from lifting the food items from the PDS in the village.

In a letter to the KHADC chief executive member (CEM) Ardent M Basaiawmoit on Friday, CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said that women of the village who had tried to attend the meeting of the dorbar were also chased away by the sordar and his deputy on Thursday.

Kharshiing said, “The dorbar authority debarred the women from taking part in any discussion on issues affecting the society, thereby taking away their right to expression and equality.”

Pointing out that the PDS is a centrally sponsored scheme which does not exclude women from benefitting from it, Kharshiing said, “The action of the dorbar leaders may deprive some of the women of the village of their right to food.”

Kharshiing urged KHADC to take immediate action by bringing about a law to resolve the matter so that women will also get a fair chance to participate in the dorbar discussions  so that rational decisions can be taken for the benefit of the society as a whole.

Kharshiing also demanded immediate removal of the sordar and his deputy, whom she termed as errant and vindictive traditional heads and their failure to dole out justice to the women in the society.- By Our Reporter
