SHILLONG, AUG 19: The body of a nine years old girl, who was washed by Ganol river remain untraceable even as district administration of West Garo hills has directed all schools to remain closed till August 21.

The district administration and the District Disaster Management Authority were informed that a minor girl of 9 (nine) years had been washed away on  August 18,  at approximately 4:30 pm by the surging Ganol river in Asibra in  Tura, deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi said.

He said, “Search is on by SDRF teams and District Disaster Management Authority to trace the body but it has not been traced till now (1pm).”

The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) in West Garo hills on Wednesday reviewed the condition of many vulnerable schools and safety of school going children in Tura and other places .

“With IMD warning extending upto August 23-24 – as precaution in consultation with DDMA , other district authorities like police and joint director , School Education and Literacy , Tura all schools like Lower Primary , Upper Primary , Secondary or Higher Secondary -public or private shall be closed on August 20 and 21” Bakshi informed.

According to him, in many cases school going children travel kilometres to reach school and are prone to accidents and can be victims of surging rivers and streams , landslides and land slips.

In some secluded schools the school building itself is unsafe.  Advisories are being sent to all the schools including private schools  from the Education departments officials in West Garo Hills and also through the NIC developed software, he said.

Further, he informed that a safety audit during the mock disaster management drills done in each and every block this year and two done in Tura last two years had indicated that many schools in West Garo Hills are highly vulnerable and prone to disasters in the event of continuous rains.

It may be noted that flood warnings have been issued already by the State Emergency Operations Centre and IMD. Meanwhile the district officials, BDOs, police and medical personnel have been alerted, the Bakshi added.-By Our Reporter
