Kidnapped man rescued

SHILLONG, SEPT 16: Seventy-seven year old Arabindra Kr Das on Thursday was rescued by the Assam police from Assam after he was kidnapped on July 25 while he was being bundled in a van.  Nurul Haque of Gamari, Ramkrishna Nagar of Karimganj district who was with the victim was also arrested.

Das wife Sunita Das had filed an FIR with Shillong police on July 26 that her husband had left home for morning walk on July 25 at about 5 am and did not return home. On the same day at about 7:15 pm her daughter Sampa Das residing in Pune received a call that her father had been kidnapped.

East Khasi hills city SP Vivek Syiem informed that a case was registered at Sadar police station. He said ransom of Rs. 2 crores was demanded from the family of Das by the kidnapper. He said as the matter was sensitive no publicity was made as it would endanger the life of the victim.

Syiem informed that the SOT along with Assam police made joint initiatives to trace the victim and the people behind the kidnapping. After a gap of 52 days, the victim was rescued by Assam police.

Syiem also claimed that no ransom was paid to the abductors. He also ascribed the success in rescuing the elderly Das to the co-operation of the family members. He said investigation is on to nab the rest of those involved.-By Our Reporter
