Enquiry into police uniform

SHILLONG, MAR 10: The state government on Thurday said it would set up an inquiry to probe into allegations that police are buying auction uniforms from Myanmar sold in the market, which makes it difficult for public to identify police and  militants.

“The allegation on police buying auction uniforms from Myanmar is serious. This will be enquired into,” home minister Roshan Warjri assured the assembly.

The issue was brought to the notice of the house by the Independent legislator John Leslee Sangma while moving a motion on failure of the state government to promote the welfare of the police department.

Stating the matter has led to a situation where it is very confusing to identify a police and militants, Sangma recalled an incident where his colleague, Indpendent legislator Saleng A Sangma, who was then an MDC, was stopped by uniform-men while he along with friends was travelling in Garo Hills.

“Thinking that they were policemen, Saleng stop to enquire what’s the reason to which they (men in uniform) replied – we are waiting for people like you and one of you has to stay back,” he narrated.

Sangma also suggested the state government to consider coming up with the state’s own uniform pattern designed for the Meghalaya police in order to solve such problems.

“We must be able to proudly identify our own policemen,” he said.

The legislator has also demanded the government to conduct inquiry into the allegations of illegal collection by police from the beat houses along the Guwahati – Tura road.

“It is alleged that vehicle operators have to give monthly collection to the beat houses,” he said.

Emphasizing on the need to provide orientation programmes to police, he said many times people suffers due to atrocities, rough up, address in rude manner and refuse help by police.

Sangma also urged the government to sanction more vehicles and upgradation of arms and weapon to the police, who are tackling militancy problems in the regon, besides upgradation of police outposts to police stations.

On this, Warjri informed that her department has already submitted a proposal for purchase of more vehicles. She also assured that she would direct that necessary inquiry is conducted into illegal collection by police in the beat houses.

Stating that orientation programme for police is being conducted, Warjri however said that she would ensure that harassment and abuse of power by police is addressed.-By Our Reporter
