KHADC bye-polls estimate

SHILLONG, OCT 7: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Friday said it is still waiting for the state government to propose the estimate expenditure for holding the upcoming December 13 – bye-elections to the six vacant seats. Speaking to reporters, KHADC chief PN Syiem said that the estimate expenditure has to be proposed by the state government for conducting bye-polls. “We are waiting for the proposal,” he informed.

The bye-election was necessitated after seven MLAs resigned from the post of MDCs of the KHADC and JHADC following the passing of the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya) (Amendment) Act, 2015, which seeks to end holding of dual posts by the MLAs, last year.

The six vacant constituencies under KHADC include 8-Nongkrem, 15-Laban-Mawprem, 22-Nongspung-Sohiong, 23-Mairang-Nongkhlaw, 24-Pariong-Mawthadraishan and 28-Rambrai-Jyrngam Constituencies.

Similarly, the single vacant seat in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) is 1-War-East constituency.

Meanwhile, the ruling Congress and the Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) have already declared their list of candidates for the bye polls.

However, the United Democratic Party (UDP) and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) are yet to complete the process of announcing their candidates.

On the other hand, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) informed that it would soon come out with the list.-By Our Reporter
