SHILLONG, MAY 7: East Jaintia Hills police have arrested three persons for allegedly serving extortion notes in the name of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC). Emiwot Nongtdu and Chos Lyngdoh were arrested yesterday from Ratacherra and Mih Myntdu, respectively, while Sakwit Phawa surrendered before the Khliehriat police today, police sources informed.
“We received reports that there were some people who were distributing extortion notes in the name of the HNLC. After due investigations, we managed to arrest Nongtdu and Lyngdoh while the mastermind of the group, Stephen Rymbai, who is from Mih Myntdu, is absconding,” the source informed.
The source said that some people in places like Lumshnong had received extortion notes from the gang, which had recently started serving such notes. However, police are doubtful that the trio were members of the HNLC although Rymbai’s arrest would provide more insights into the modus operandi of the group, the source said.- By Our Reporter
