SHILLONG, SEPT 14: The no confidence motion against the Congress led MUA II coalition government moved by the opposition has been admitted in the assembly on Wednesday and it will be disposed off on Thursday afternoon.

Fourteen of the sixteen members from the opposition bench stood up to support the NC after which speaker Abu Taher Mondal announced that as more than 10 members have supported the NC, it now has the permission of the house to admit the NC.

Mondal said, “Therefore I admit the NC with the leave of the House.”

The NC was jointly tabled by NPP MLA and opposition chief whip James K Sangma, HSPDP chief Ardent M Basaiawmoit and UDP MLA Jemino Mawthoh on September 12, against the Mukul Sangma  headed coalition government.

Mondal informed that September 15  has been fixed for disposal of the NC at 12 noon and all businesses of the day have been suspended.

The content of no-confidence motion which was read on the floor of the house stated– “Whereas the present MUA government has failed on all fronts of development, it has failed to maintain the law and order situation in the state and is responsible for the financial crisis in the state.”

“Therefore, we beg to move this house expresses want of confidence against the council of ministers headed by Mukul Sangma,” it stated.

In the 60-member assembly, the ruling Meghalaya United Alliance comprises 30 Congress members, two of the Nationalist Congress Party and 11 Independents.

The opposition had earlier also moved a resolution seeking the removal of the Speaker which will be taken up for discussion on the last day of the session on September 16.

Meanwhile, a three-line whip was also issued to all the members of the ruling coalition MUA to ensure that they stand united against the NC moved by opposition bench.-By Our Reporter
