SHILLONG, AUG 8: Over 20 films and documentaries based on the life and teachings of noble laureate Mother Teresa will be screened in a 4-day film festival to be held in the state’s capital from September 6 to 9.
Meghalaya is also set to be the starting point of the Mother Teresa International Film Festival (MTIFF) before it goes around the states of the North East India till February 25, next year as a mark of cononization of Mother Teresa.
Organized by the World Catholic Association’s for Communication’s India Chapter, the film festival will kick off from Kolkata on August 26 after which it will travel to around 50 other countries – UK, Malaysia, Ireland, Italy, Australia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and China.
Addressing newsmen on Monday, MTIFF 2016 North East India director Fr Francis Stephen said that they would present the best and biggest repertoire of films and documentaries made on the noble laureate which was inspired by her life.
“The objective of the film festival aims at promoting peace through life history of Mother Teresa. It is also to send a message to the world about the importance of spreading peace, love and service,” he said.
In Shillong, the inauguration of the film festival which will be held at the State Central Library will be attended by Governor V Shanmuganathan and Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
Stating that over 25,000 crowds is expected to attend during the 4-day festival, Fr Stephen informed that over 800 free passes per show (one day) are available while urging the public to avail these passes in advance from August 15 to 30.
“The Fifth World”, “Revelation in Kolkata”, “Precious Love” and “My Karma” – are some of the films to be screened during the festival.
“We also appealed to specially-abled persons to attend the festival apart from students,” he said.
The Roman Catholic nun, who passed away in 1997 after serving the poor and sick on the streets of Kolkata for 45 years, and who won the Noble Price for Peace on 1979 will be declared as a Saint on September 4 by Pope Francis in the Vatican City.
Meanwhile, the festival will also be held at Jowai, West Jaintia Hills District on September 14 to 17 and then to other states of the NE region.
The other Indian cities were the film will be showcased include Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Udaipur, Guwahati, Patna, Indore, Ranchi and four cities of Kerala.-By Our Reporter
