Fissures in UDP over seat sharing

SHILLONG, JULY 20: The Mylliem Circle of the United Democratic Party (UDP) has opposed the decision of the alliance forged by the two regional political parties to reserve the Mylliem seat for the Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP).

The decision was unanimously taken at an emergent meeting of the executive committee of the UDP Mylliem Circle held on Thursday, a day after the Coordination Committee of UDP-HSPDP Alliance finalized the seat sharing.

Mylliem, which is presently represented by sitting Congress MLA Ronnie V Lyngdoh, is one of the 10 seats reserved for the HSPDP and to be supported by the UDP for the upcoming Assembly elections, slated to be early next year.

However, the decision has not come out well for the supporters of the UDP, which have also decided to go against the party’s decision by continuing their support to former KSU leader Hamletson Dohling in the forthcoming elections.

Dohling, which had also earlier contested in 2013 elections, is presently holding the post of president of the UDP state youth wing.

In a statement issued here, UDP Mylliem Circle general secretary Penny Kharbhoi said, “We have unanimously decided not to accept the decision of the Coordination Committee of the UDP-HSPDP Alliance.”

He added, “We however decided to extend our full support to Dohling even if he contested from whichever political party as all supporters will work hard to ensure his winning the election.”

Moreover, Kharbhoi said that the UDP Mylliem Circle also urged the people of Mylliem constituency not to be misled by anyone but to ensure their support to Dohling in 2018.
