SHILLONG, JULY 15: The Meghalaya government is waiting for the approval of the union government for its proposed implementation of the Flood Management and Protection of Wah Umkhrah River and Wah Umshyrpi River project in the capital city.
The Meghalaya Water Resources department had submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) with an estimate of Rs 4645.817 lakh under the ‘flood control on flash flood’ along the rivers of ‘Wahumkhrah’ and ‘Umshyrpi’.
“We are still waiting for the approval of the union ministry of water resources,” Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Water Resources, Rowell Lyngdoh told reporters on Monday.
The DPR was also sent to the Brahmaputra Board and the Central Water Commission (CWC) for further examination and recommendation.
The Flood Management and Protection of Wahumkhrah and Umshyrpi river project is conceptualized to control frequent floods occurring in Pynthorumkhrah areas, protection of agricultural lands and control overflowing of Wahumkhrah and Umshyrpi.
For the past decades, Pynthorumkhrah and Polo areas are the worst hit areas during monsoon seasons as the Umkhrah and Umshyrpi rivers water overflows and cause floods in the respective residential and bazaar areas.
Lyngdoh said if the projects are approved and completed it will to a great extent helps in controlling the frequent occurrence of floods. – By Our Reporter
